Applications & Materials

BACTIglas™ can be added to a wide range of polymers and processes to impart an antimicrobial property, and safely add value to products and applications.

Applications and Materials.

By incorporating BACTIglas™ into your product ranges, you will not only provide an antimicrobial surface and protect it against harmful bacteria, but also improve your products market global presence.

Healthcare.

Infection control in healthcare settings is one of the most significant challenges to hospitals and the impact on patients from hospital acquired infections (HAIs) continues to be a worry in healthcare systems around the world.

Of increasing concern is HAIs from the so called ‘Superbugs’ which are resistant to many of the lifesaving antimicrobial medicines currently available such as antibiotics.
Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), an extremely serious infection happens more often to hospital patients as they are likely to have greater infection opportunities such as through an open wound, stoma or catheter.

BACTIglas™ has been demonstrated as highly effective at killing a wide range of Superbugs including MRSA, Clostridioides difficile (C.difficile) and Campylobacter.

By incorporating BACTIglas™ into your materials for healthcare products and environments, in harmony with an ongoing policy of excellent hygiene practices it will provide another line of defence against HAIs such as MRSA.

Food Preparation and Service.

As the hygiene and safety demands of the transportation, handling, preparation and serving of food continues to develop and increase the addition of a food safe antimicrobial can provide an extra level of defence for the consumer. Food can be at risk from many different bacteria potentially leading to a host of conditions including food poisoning which can in some cases be fatal.

Whilst undercooking is the most common source of food poisoning, contamination of different food stuffs coming into contact with the same contaminated surface is another risk factor. For example, cutting vegetables on a board which has previously had raw chicken prepared on it poses a significant risk of infection from Salmonella or Campylobacter.

The use of BACTIglas™ in applications such as refrigerators, chopping boards, work surfaces, food trays and utensil handles is an obvious simple step to help reduce the risk of bacteria growth on surfaces in food preparation areas. Common examples of bacteria which can BACTIglas™ has been demonstrated to be effective against includes Escherichia coli (E.coli) Campylobacter, Listeria and Salmonella.

By incorporating BACTIglas™ into your polymer materials, this risk of bacteria growth on surfaces can be significantly reduced. BACTIglas™ is food contact safe therefore adding it to your product range provides safety and adds value.

Safe and Clean Transportation.

The addition of BACTIglas™, a proven antimicrobial technology, into mass transit environments such as rail, aviation, buses and other areas of public transport systems can help to improve confidence of passengers by providing surfaces that have improved hygienic qualities.

By using BACTIglas™ in frequently touched surfaces, articles such as polymer coated grab rails, soap and towel dispensers, seat backs, food trays and tables the growth of bacteria on these surfaces can be reduced. In synthetic textiles such as non-woven polypropylene BACTIglas™ can help transport environments such as head rest covers feel fresher and cleaner by reducing stains and odours caused by microbial growth

Education

The addition of a BACTIglas™ into a range of polymer-based products and equipment used in Education settings can help to reduce unwanted bacterial growth in a wide range of applications and situations particularly in high touch and high usage areas such as chair backs, door handles, push plates, light switches countertops, food trays, canteen areas light switches and many other applications.

Commercial Products and Work Settings

High traffic and high touch surfaces can sometimes be subject to lapses in cleaning protocols, by incorporating BACTIglas™ into surfaces, equipment and office furniture such as soap dispensers, door handles, desks and balustrades the risk of bacterial growth is greatly reduced as the antimicrobial technology is actively working between each cleaning period. BACTIglas™.

Treatable Materials

The BACTIglas™ range of additive masterbatches, powders and compounds are extremely versatile and can be effectively incorporated into a huge range of different applications and materials.

BACTIglas™ can be formulated into a wide range of different polymer grades, either from our standard range of polymers or a bespoke formulation to meet your specific requirements. Bactiglas™ can be used in many polymer processes including injection moulding, film, fibre and sheet extrusion through to casting and compression. Bactiglas™ can be used in polymers including:

  • Acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS)
  • Ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA)
  • High impact polystyrene (HIPS)
  • Polyethylene (PE)
  • Polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA)
  • Polypropylene (PP)
  • Polycarbonate (PC)
  • Polystyrene (PS)
  • Polyvinyl chloride (PVC)
  • Silicone
  • Thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU)

Bactiglas™ can be easily incorporated into, powder paints, solvent based paints, inks and coatings to provide an antimicrobial finished surface. Areas of application for Bactiglas™ antimicrobial finishes could be but not limited to:

  • Decorative coatings
  • Speciality Inks for printed surfaces
  • Lacquers & varnishes
  • Industrial coatings
  • Powder coat applications

BACTIglas™ can be incorporated into a range of textiles to provide both an antimicrobial property and also reduce the incidents of malodour and staining. Textile applications could involve:

  • Sports wear
  • Hospital garments / Scrubs
  • Bedding
  • Uniforms
